Step 4: Managing Permissions Before Publishing Your Dashboard

Writer: nitin rungtanitin rungta

Before you can publish your Power BI dashboard using a public link, you need to make sure you have the correct permissions in your organization.

Let’s walk through how to check and request Admin Rights, and how to enable the Publish to Web feature.

Step 1: Request Admin Rights

In many organizations, certain Power BI features—like generating public links—are disabled by default.

To enable them, you will need Power BI Admin Rights or help from your IT administrator.

What to do:

  • Contact your IT team.

  • Request Admin Rights for Power BI or Microsoft Fabric via the Microsoft Admin Portal.

⚠️ Note: Some organizations block Power BI features entirely, so make sure to double-check with IT.

Step 2: Check if You Have Admin Rights

  1. Go to https://app.powerbi.com.

  2. Click on the Gear Icon (⚙) in the top-right corner.

  3. Click Admin Portal.

What you might see:

  • If you can’t access the Admin Portal, you don’t have admin rights.

  • If it looks like the below, you have Admin Rights.

Step 3: Enable "Publish to Web"

Once you have Admin Rights:

  1. Go back to app.powerbi.com.

  2. Click the Gear Icon and select Admin Portal.

  3. Click Tenant Settings.

  4. Use the Filter by Keyword box and search for "Embed".

  5. Under Publish to Web, enable all options.

Done! You now have the permissions required to share your dashboard via a public link.
